ABYC opti sailors were joined by five Del Rey Yacht Club and Newport Beach sailor over the
weekend to make a strong showing for two days of Junior Spring Sailing. Finding coaches for
junior sailing is a challenge for many clubs in Southern California right now and with some
availability issues at other clubs, ABYC was able to attract some additional sailors for the
weekend. Ten Champ fleet and five Green fleet sailors participated in total.
On day one, the wind gradually built to 10-12 knots and coaching focused on roll tacks, light
wind acceleration and practice racing. On day two, the sailors ran through a video debrief of
day one before hitting the water for more boat handling drills and practice racing in winds that
peaked around 12-14 knots. ABYC’s Aston Smith was assisted by one of his old opti sparing
partners Oliver Keeves from Del Rey, rounding out a great weekend of collaboration between
the two clubs with respect to both sailors and coaching.
There is a short video of the sailors heading out of the channel here and we look forward to
seeing the Del Rey sailors returning in the coming weeks.
