The California 20 was designed by C. William Lapworth in 1960 and went into production in 1961. It quickly became the most popular of the Cal line of fiberglass sailboats and 1,945 of the boats were built. Most of the production occurred throughout the 60’s when the Jensen Marine Factory in Costa Mesa, California was turning out as many as one boat a day! Though production ceased in 1975, the Cal 20 is still perhaps the most common boat you will see in marinas on the west coast of the U.S.
Cal 20s were (and still are) inexpensive to buy, own and maintain. The base price was $3,200 throughout most of the 60’s which put her within reach of just about everyone. The cockpit is nearly 8' long and is self-bailing. Below she has four bunks, a head and storage bins. For her 20' length, she is one of the most practical boats imaginable.
Come join us for great racing year round. ABYC is an active, family-oriented, volunteer-driven club with myriad programs and activities for sailors, their families and friends. For more information about joining ABYC, reach out to fleet captain Jeff Ives for more info.
The Alamitos Bay Yacht Club multihull fleet is a diverse group made up of individuals who share a common interest in catamaran sailing recreationally and for racing. The boats in our fleet include a number of different manufacturer makes, models, and sizes of catamarans including F18, Nacra foiling 20, A Class, and to the Hobie 16. Catamaran sailors enjoy the excitement, thrill, and performance of these boats on the water while racing, cruising, or day sailing.
The ABYC multihull fleet is an active fleet that also travels to regional and national regattas. Our fleet includes world champions and Olympic medal winners along with weekend warriors and newcomers alike. Long Beach’s ideal climate offers year round sailing and the regatta schedule is full from Midwinters in February to the Thanksgiving Turkey Regatta. Plus with active fleets in San Diego and San Francisco we get a lot of out of town California boats that travel to Long Beach for the good breeze and flat waters we have locally.
Our current United States Olympic team for the foiling Nacra 17 trains out of our club and skippered by Riley Gibbs who grew up junior sailing out of ABYC.
As sailboats evolve catamarans and foiling boats are on the future of sailing. If you're interested in going fast on the water on a truly active boat give a multihull a try. Contact Nick Kofski for opportunities to crew or just reach out to any of us you see rigging up in the yard, another boat in the fleet is always a great thing.
The Naples Sabot is an 8 foot, 1 person, one-design sailboat that has been the sailing trainer of choice in Southern California for nearly 60 years. During that time, the Naples Sabot has created some of the finest and most talented sailors in our sport.
The origin of the Briny Bunch: a social and sailing non-profit society using the Sabot sailboat in competition, bay and luncheon cruising, racing seminars and workshops and as an excuse for compatible sailors to get together to laugh, cry and commiserate.
The Briny Bunch started in 1995. A friendship of mutual interests and outlook expanded into forming a delightful larger Briny Bunch and regular weekly and bi-weekly practice racing sessions along with semi-mandatory cocktail hours. Membership is mostly a matter of having a sabot, enjoying watching or helping with sabot races, and the ability to be beaten in races.
Alamitos Bay Yacht Club has a Senior Sabot Fleet known as the "Sabotiers". The Sabotiers have monthly "Sabot Sunday" fleet races followed by an informal fleet meeting with a happy hour, trophy presentation and dinner. Contact Fleet Captain Cindy Heavrin if interested in joining.
The ABYC Tempest fleet is open to active people who want to sail and race a fun, safe, exciting, two-man keel boat. We welcome all sailors, from the very experienced to those who simply want to learn how to sail.
The fleet is a strong supporter of the adult-sailing program at ABYC. We provide volunteer instructors, instruction material and, when they are needed, boats for teaching. In affiliation with the American Sailing Association we train sailors to become skilled sailing instructors.
You do not need to own a boat to join the fleet. All you need is an interest in sailing and sailboat racing, and we will find a way to get you out on the water in a Tempest. If you are not a member of ABYC, you can be our guest. You will have a chance to go sailing and learn more about ABYC.
Henk Baars is our Fleet Captain, and you if you want to know about the Tempest fleet, you should send an e-mail to him at [email protected]
The ABYC R/C Fleet primarily sails in DF95 boats. Contact fleet captain Don Shirley for more info.
